3 Bills On School Consolidation – one from Evanston Senator Jeff Schoenberg
SB1234. sponsored by State Senator Jeff Schoenberg of Evanston. This is a BS Anti-consolidation bill requiring study instead of action. It delays any action by the General Assembly and governor until AFTER Jan. 1, 2013.
HB1216. This one establishes a “School District Realignment and Consolidation Commission” to make recommendations on: (a) number of school districts in the state, (b) optimal amount of enrollment for a district, and (c) where consolidation and realignment should occur or not occur.
HB1886. This would abolish all school districts except in Chicago, shifting responsibility to local counties to create and take responsbility for new school districts.
The last one makes the most sense to us. Ed.
